Safety Alert

4/21/17 - 11:15 a.m.

Dear South Meadows Families,

I wanted to provide an update on the threats we have received this week. Today, we identified the student who was responsible for yesterday’s message on the bathroom stall. That student has been removed from school. Neither that threat nor the threat posted on social media on Monday evening were viable; however, making threats is a very serious matter and the students are facing consequences.

Please know that your students are safe here and that all of our staff members are here to protect and support them.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

Mary Mendez

Dear South Meadows Families,

I wanted to let you know that this afternoon a message was found on a bathroom stall repeating the threat we became aware of earlier in the week, this time referencing violence at school tomorrow. Police were alerted of the threat immediately.

Both we and the police feel confident that this message is merely attempting to re-ignite the anxiety and disruption that was caused to the school day on Tuesday, and that there is no actual danger to the school.

There will, however, be an increased police presence at the school tomorrow to ensure all students and staff are safe.

You can help us restore calm to our school by encouraging students not to speculate or spread rumors, especially on social media.

Please know that if we felt there was a true threat to the school, we would not be holding school. The safety of our students and staff is our number one concern.

Thank you,

Mary Mendez

A Note from the Principal:

Dear South Meadows Students and Families,

Welcome to South Meadows Middle School! It is an exciting time for your students as they enter into the middle years. This is a time of self- discovery, extended learning and preparation for High School and beyond. Our staff takes pride in their work with students and they also work to ensure that students, too, take PRIDE in all they accomplish. At SMMS this is what PRIDE means to us:

  • Perseverance
  • Responsibility
  • Integrity
  • Diversity
  • Excellence

These words represent what we are about and what we expect from all who teach and learn here.

The next two years are critical years for your student and although your child may seem more independent, he or she still needs your constant support. I encourage you to become a part of the life of middle school!    There are many ways you can be involved.  Visit our website for more information on how you can volunteer and contribute to the success of your child’s middle school experience.

Finally, when you receive a student handbook please review the critical information with your child.  Students will also review this information through advisory lessons.

Once again, welcome!  I’m looking forward to working with you and your student in the coming year and making this a positive step in your child’s future.  Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns.
