Safety Alert

Dear West Union Families,

I wanted to let you know about an incident that took place at our school this morning with a stranger on campus.

At approximately 7am, an unidentified man was seen attempting to enter the building.  The custodian and I approached the man and explained he was not allowed on campus.  When he did not leave immediately, Sheriff’s Deputies were called.

While the Deputies were questioning and searching the man, students were kept on buses as a precaution.  Several students witnessed the officers’ interactions with the man, which included him alternately being in and out of handcuffs.  While we don’t know exactly what the officers learned about the man’s presence on campus, we were assured that he was not carrying a weapon.  Also, it should be noted that he did not approach any students or staff members while he was on campus.  The officers escorted the man off campus prior to the beginning of school.

Despite the fact that the man did not appear to be a threat to the school or students, we have asked Sheriff’s Deputies to conduct additional patrols at the school today and tomorrow.

I know this may have been unsettling to some of the students, and we are doing our best to talk to them, ensure they feel safe, and have their questions answered.  If your child is having a difficult time processing the incident, please let us know so we can work together to help them feel more settled.  As always, the safety of our students and security of our building is our top priority.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

John Allen

Pennies for Patients

Once again West Union students will be participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients, Pasta for Pennies fundraiser. For the past several years this has been a very successful fundraiser at West Union and a wonderful learning experience for our students. For more information about the Leukemia and Lymphoma society and how the money we raise supports cancer patients and cancer research, please visit
As in years past, students are encouraged to ask family members and friends for donations. Donations can be in the form of spare change, dollar bills, checks made out to LLSStudents are asked to bring donations to school in their cardboard donation box and put the money in their classroom donation box each morning. Donations will be collected each morning by our SALT team. You can also donate online at Once on our school homepage, enter your teacher’s last name in the search bar and you will be taking to your class page.
Last year our school raised $729.10. In 2014 we raised an amazing $1,762.79!  If we raise $1000, we will earn a school-wide dance party to celebrate! In addition, our top fundraising classroom will earn a Pasta Party provided by The Olive Garden to include salad, pasta and breadsticks!

Thank you for your continued support of our school’s service learning projects! If you have questions or would like more information about this fundraiser, please contact our school counselor and SALT team advisor, Mrs. Ng by calling the school or e-mailing her at

Hearing Screenings to Begin in February

Starting in February, the District will conduct hearing screenings for students in grades K, 1 and 3 in partnership with the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation.

Students who do not pass the initial screening will be re-screened within approximately 30 days to take into account any transient hearing loss (i.e. from a head cold). That second screening will be conducted by an audiologist from the Northwest Regional Education Service District (NWRESD). Parents will be notified by mail if their child did not pass the second screening. An explanation of results along with resource information for possible consultation with a hearing specialist will be included in that notification.

Results for all students screened will be placed in the Health section of the students’ cumulative file. For more information or if you would like to opt your child out of the screenings, please talk to your school’s office manager or call the District’s Hearing Screening Team at 503-844-1553.
