Sarah Allen and Cara Strever have won the GOLD Award in the “Think Globally, Report Locally Video Competition” for their video Growing Up Girl.  The Century High School students and their teacher, Keith Allen, have won a trip to New York City for the United Nations Youth Leadership Summit, July 17-19.

Growing Up Girl relates personal stories of girls from abroad now living in Hillsboro.

Judging of the videos was conducted by a panel of award-winning international journalists.  Judges praised the winning video for finding a great local angle to the story, for excellent writing, and for the variety of voices represented in the interviews.  One judge singled out “the quality of thought” in the video.

This national high school video competition was sponsored by the United Nations Foundation’s The People Speak and the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation.  Students were challenged to find a local angle to one of four global topics and produce one-to-two minute videos.
Sarah Allen has also been recognized as the Oregon Student Journalist of the Year, a Ford Family Foundation Scholar and an Al Neuharth Free Spirit Journalism Scholar.  Cara Strever has earned a significant scholarship to attend Pepperdine University.
