Smarter Balance Testing Information

This year, the Hillsboro School District is replacing the OAKS test in reading and math with the new Smarter Balanced Assessment.   The new assessments will focus on the Common Core State Standards for Math and English/Language Arts and be administered through a computerized testing system being developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC).  Parents are invited to take a practice Smarter Balanced test with their student: http://sbac.portal.airast.org/practice-test

Testing begins: April 28, 2015

Facts:

1.       Liberty will test all juniors in Math from April 28 until May 14.

               a.       Make-up sessions will be available for students who do not finish during assigned sessions.

2.       Liberty will test all juniors in English/Language Arts starting May 11 until May 29.

               a.       Make-up sessions will be available for students who do not finish during assigned sessions.

3.       Once a student begins testing in a subject, he/she has only ten days to complete that particular assessment.

4.       The Common Core suggests that students are given 4.5 hours to complete each test; Liberty will allow six scheduled hours, as well as extra time on an as-needed basis.

               a.       The six scheduled hours will be split between two three-hour sessions.

5.       SBAC testing will not interfere with students who are taking AP tests; the schedule works around AP testing.

SBAC Calendar:

  • ·         In order to figure out when your student is testing, first look for his/her math or English teacher’s name.
  • ·         Next to each teacher’s name is a number. For example, Reigel, 1-1 (19)

o   The first number refers to the day (day 1 or day 2)

o   The second number refers to the period (1, 2, 3, or 4)

o   The third number (in parenthesis) refers to how many students that teacher will send to test that period.

  • ·         Be sure to locate not only your student’s teacher, but also the correct day and period in order to see when your student will test.
